![]() ![]() Utilizing OSC via Touch Designer, we were able to send commands from a mobile tablet to remotely display clips, and to trigger animations and transitions based on pre-set show cues. Recently, we used OSC at the Hollywood Film Awards, the American Music Awards, and the American Country Countdown Awards. We use OSC with a variety of compatible applications such as Lemur, Unity, and Resolume. We've successfully utilized OSC in many of our projects. To boot, the OSC data rate is Gigabit speed while the MIDI data rate is only around 31,250 bits per second! OSC also includes a picosecond-resolution timestamp while the MIDI beat-clock is low-resolution with a precision of about 20,833 microseconds. OSC uses a human readable, URL-style address format and can send data in forms of words or numbers. MIDI uses a compact binary message format with a limited number of fields. With OSC you can transmit multiple data types like 32-bit integers, floating point numbers, strings and more while MIDI only transmits 1-byte integers 0-255. OSC is infinitely granular and bundled UDP messages occur simultaneously, continuously, and nonstop where MIDI is limited to steps and divisions because it supports a very limited range of values. We are now using OSC on projects where, in the past, we would have used MIDI. This means that applications can send data using UDP to other hosts on an IP network without prior set-up of specific channels or paths, making OSC inherently networkable and so very easy to use via local networks and the Internet. This is different from "connection-oriented communication", which relies on a predetermined fixed data channel. By sending data as its own unit, each data unit is identified and routed based on the information contained within each unit. OSC is built on the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), which uses “connectionless communication" as a way to transmit information. Originally developed by the UC Berkeley Center for New Music and Audio Technology (CNMAT), OSC introduced a robust communications method to remotely control media and other digital processes. We've been totally digging Open Sound Control lately. OSC is often an intermediary protocol sending messages to other devices on the same network which can interface with specific hardware. Others: GarageBand includes other types of effects, such as amp models, filters, pitch shifters, and other specialized effects.Open Sound Control is a communication protocol among computers and multimedia devices which enables you to control them remotely. It can add definition and presence to voices and instruments, add ambience to a sound, or simulate different rooms and other acoustic environments. Reverb: Reverb simulates the natural reflections of a sound in a surrounding space. ![]() It is often used as the first in a series of effects, and is included on audio tracks to help reduce input noise. Noise Gate: A noise gate reduces low-level noise by cutting off the sound when it falls below a certain minimum level. The signal can also be detuned relative to the original. Like delay effects, they repeat the sound, but in addition, they shift or modulate when the repeated signal plays back. Modulation: Modulation effects include chorus, flangers, and phasers. GarageBand patches have an EQ effect that lets you view and edit different frequency bands. EQ is likely the most commonly used effect in popular music. ![]() You can use EQ to make both subtle and dramatic changes to your projects. It can add a subtle sense of space to a sound, or create the impression that a voice or an instrument is in a large room, a cavern, or outer space.ĭistortion: Distortion effects, which include amp simulation and overdrive, change the tone of the original sound to re-create analog or digital distortion.ĮQ: EQ (short for equalization) is a powerful and versatile effect that lets you change the level of selected frequencies in a sound. Compressors can add punch and definition to a track or an entire song, and make it sound better when played on audio equipment with a narrow dynamic range.ĭelay: A delay effect repeats a sound like an echo. GarageBand includes a variety of studio-quality effect plug-ins that you can use in your projects:Ĭompressor: A compressor adjusts the volume of the patch to smooth out sudden level changes. ![]()
